“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.”

Language hubs are at the pilot stage and provide support to a limited number of schools. Hubs provide an extensive range of CPD activities for 45 schools within the Language Hub network; a CPD event open to 10 further local schools in each of the regional hubs (due to be held in summer 2019 and summer 2020); and publicity for events beyond the network, if aligned to the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Pedagogy Review.
Language Hub
Dixon’s Kings Academy is a NCELP Language Hub. Some activity is limited to identified partner schools. Free online schemes and resources are available for all schools.
Schemes of Work
NCELP Schemes of Work are proposed as examples of how language knowledge and practice can be sequenced and re-visited systematically to support progression in the early stages of language development within a low exposure foreign language setting.
Resource portal
The NCELP Resource Portal is an open, searchable, and sustainable database for materials supporting language learning and teaching, particularly in the areas of vocabulary, phonics, grammar, meaningful practice, corrective feedback in interaction, and motivation.
Mnadarin Excellence Programme (secondary)
This programme funds and supports schools to deliver intensive Mandarin study, and to develop teachers and help them increase the number of pupils studying Mandarin. All state-funded secondary schools in England with ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ Ofsted ratings can apply for the programme.
Association for Language Learning
The Association state:
The Association for Language Learning (ALL) is an independent registered charity and the UK’s major subject association for those involved in the teaching of foreign languages at all levels.
We exist to represent and support language teachers and are committed to their ongoing professional development. As we are funded largely through membership subscriptions, we work to represent the views of language teachers.
We also work collaboratively with a range of national and international organisations with similar aims, on languages initiatives, policy and projects for both members and non-members.
